The Lane House draws its inspiration from the concept of "hutong", a term referring to narrow lanes or alleys, commonly associated with northern Chinese cities, especially Beijing. Chao's design explores the possibilities of "loading", "uninstalling", and "building up inside", creating a unique balance between privacy and openness. The design features various types of block rooms for different functions, each having at least two connection points, embodying the concept of "a block within a block", "a lane within a lane".
What sets the Lane House apart from other designs is its focus on the relationship between privacy and openness. The owners can adjust the level of privacy they desire using grilles, curtains, or by simply opening up the space. Each room, designed with a specific function in mind, provides at least two or more "connections" to other blocks, like holes, windows or doors, forming a cohesive and interconnected space.
The Lane House was realized using natural materials like stone, wood, metal, and glass, with minimal construction methods to create a harmonious interior and exterior gray space. Chao paid special attention to the ritual way of life, adjusting and optimizing the space to improve efficiency and provide the owners with more opportunities to create their ideal way of living.
One of the biggest challenges Chao faced during the design process was understanding the way people desired to live and their attitude towards the living space. He focused on reducing interference from elements and techniques like colors and shapes to concentrate on the ritual way of life. The result is a space where the owners can dine or work in the kitchen, bedroom, living room, or at a table at any time, enhancing their perceptions and understandings of a day in the city.
Chao's Lane House is a testament to innovative residential design. It pushes the boundaries of traditional living spaces, offering a unique balance of privacy and openness. The Lane House is not just a home, but a space that challenges and revolutionizes the way people live.
